Hey, I started using twitter (inspired by Steve Dembo). I'm still looking for good educators to follow and I thought the MACULSpace group would be a good group to follow on twitter. It seems I need some more distractions in my life :-)
So, if you wouldn't mind, who out there twitters and what is your address?
I didn't get it until I tried it. I've been using Twitter for a year now. It seemed stupid at first, but after about a month I found that it was one of the best tools for my own learning. I don't follow people who post frivolous things all day long, I don't have time for that. I follow people who share cool things they have discovered, have written about on their blog, or created (lessons, rubrics, surveys, Voicethreads, etc). I have used it to ask questions when I need help, and usually get responses that do indeed help within a few minutes. You also receive notification for events that are starting, like presentations on UStream or EdTechTalk.
I haven't seen it be used too much with students, but one good example that I can remember is a guy from the UK who was showing his students how to use Google Earth. He asked people to post a twit about where they live, and his students found where the person was using Google Earth. They were finding people from all over the world. I have a few high school students from South Korea who follow me (they follow many of the people their teacher does, a teacher who does many global collaborative projects).
I think there is a classroom application, and as a matter of fact, I'm doing a preso on it at ETCC later this month. The classroom application is really an application for OUTSIDE the classroom, but let's say, I think Twitter has definite educational possibilities for high schoolers. Follow me at MBAmom.
Hi Jane, I see you are busier in retirement than anyone I know. I too Twiiter, under the name, lyrichardson just getting started. How creative is that? I guess that son of yours got his MBA. My daughter is now living in Chicago. www.conversationswithacoach.com
Hey Mike, Started twittering 2 weeks ago following over 1000 teacher/educators and 500 following me. I post about what I'm doing in class and people respond with some great idea that I have used. Finding new projects, new tools and developing a personal learning community at http://sites.google.com/site/zmanrdz/. Best learning I have had as a computer tech person. I don't get the opportunity to talk with others tech people very much. Go TWITTER!!!!
I have used it with my upper level students who work on a flexible schedule much like an independant study. Each day they are to report in on what they did in class/lab. I check it on a regular basis for updates and to see their progress in the class. Short quick response from them, but in time it paints a larger picture. I try to have them give quality posts rather than short quick posts.
In the one week I have been using Twitter, I have been amazed. I keep it open all day and in rolls thoughts from Wesley Fryer, Steve Dembo, Will Richardson, Kathleen Schrock, Tony Vincent and a bundle of my MACUL buddies. Links, ideas, heads up on webcasts or webinars, Merlin Mann's gripping insight into the Spitzer scandal, and yes some trivial stuff as well. What an amazing collection of brain power!
I absolutely agree, there is so much coming through my twitter, I could never keep up on this alone! the more people I follow the more azing it is! 15 min into this morning I learned something new comparing Google Docs and Zoho. This comparision came from a student in one of my classes that I hooked on Second Life, DEN, Twitter and more. Today he started blogging! www.gregnoack.com I love to see the professional develkopment continue after the face to face. By teh way I teach my classes using NING!
Hi everyone,
In the class CEP 810 that I am taking right now, we have been talking about Excel 2007 this week. I ran across some of the advantages of using Excel 2007 rather than Excel 2003. Here are the advantages:
