Hi Matt, I've been plurking for a year now. It is easier to follow discussion threads compared to Twitter. I post to both using Ping.fm.
I find I get more responses on Plurk, maybe because everyone is using Twitter. Maybe that will change when Oprah starts Plurking. You can find me at http://www.plurk.com/jstew
Another thing, you get this thing called Karma on plurk the more you use it. I guess it is their way to hook you.
So far, I feel like I've been using Plurk more than twitter...a little more personalized I think. This may be a great utility for educators to communicate with each other, but anyone have any ideas how we could utilize this in the classroom; especially with how filtered and restricted the internet is at many schools? Daily updates to students/parents? Anything else?
For myself, I find that I like Plurk better than twitter. I really like the user interface with Plurk. The time line feature is really cool.
The real question will be, is Plurk blocked by the filter at school? A lot of sites I have learned about are great but blocked at school where I spend most of my time online. All blogs are blocked which is sad. Our tech director just retired and our one other tech guy is kind of running things right now. Don't know when we will hire a new tech director. The guy running things believes we need to open so sites up for teachers to use. If we want teachers to use technology we need to open that technology up to them.
I know without even looking that it will be blocked at the school I teach at. Its sad to see many sites that could be used to enhance education are unavailable.
Joe, you should check on Emodo. It is a microblogging site like Twitter and Plurk that is created only for K-12 students and educators (in much the same way Edublogs is). School districts that I have worked with have been more willing to unblock Emodo for that reason (or not have it blocked in the first place).
I am in the same boat as you. I have never used Twitter or Plurk. People say that it can become addicting. I'm not addicted yet but we'll see what happens over the course of this semester.
I haven't plurked much yet, but plan on making it a daily or semi daily event for me. You can follow me at http://www.plurk.com/joerohrhoff.
I am finding that while I don't Plurk or Twitter quite that much, I can see students quickly becoming addicted to Plurk.com and would probably have some pretty creative uses for it. I am curious to see their thoughts on it once the school year starts back up.
However, like many of you I am sure it would be blocked at the moment in my district. The good thing is that our tech department carries a lot of clout, so if I could convince them of a great use for it, they may allow it. I will have to see.
I am on plurk - my name is karlyb. I use both plurk and twitter. I like plurk for the conversations, plus it is just fun! I need to check for all these MACUL plurkers, thanks!
