Creating SCORM Learning Objects - Friday, March 12 1-2 PM Amway GP - Vandenberg B

It looks like my session is up against Steve Dembo's on 'Cool Websites' - so I think I need to get the word out :)

I'm doing a hands-on session on creating SCORM compliant Learning Objects and course authoring for your learning management system.  We'll talk about making interactive learning content that can be created once and published into multiple locations, such as your LMS (Angel, Blackboard, Moodle) or the web.  In addition, we'll talk a bit about the future of mobile learning, and how important it might be to create content that is accessible on hand held mobile internet connected devices (iPod and other tablets).

Where: Vandenberg B, Amway, Concourse Level - Friday March 12, 2010 from 1:00 PM-2:00 PM

What exactly is SCORM, I just did a google search and it didn't really help much. Is this one of those things that if I have to ask then this session probably isn't for me?

Thanks
Long acronym short is... it's a way to make a learning object (like a game, animation, simulation, quiz) developed outside of a learning management system to talk to the LMS (gradebook). There are lot's of eLearning authoring systems which will produce SCORM compliant packages that can be imported into the LMS of your choice, and we'll play with a couple free ones.

There's a bit more to it thant his short blurb and I hope that helps.
Thanks, that does help. The explanations I found were pretty laden with acronyms and kept referencing SCORM in the definition of SCORM.
This sounds like something I'd like to know more about. Can you design your own learning object with SCORM? Is it a web based application? Is it free?
Patricia - SCORM is a standard that specifies how the learning object communicates with a LMS (like Blackboard, Angel, Moodle, etc) I'll talk a bit about that spec, and then we'll build a couple SCORM compliant games and content using some free software I'll point people to - and then import them into a LMS.

Some of the authoring applications cost thousands of dollars (like Articulate and Trivantis) and some are free... I'm sticking with free stuff :)
Free is good. Can I embed it in my Wiki?
Well... we can publish some to a wiki or blog as a SWF file - but SCORM compliant objects need to talk to something like Moodle or Blackboard.
Hi Ron-
I am not attending Macul this year and would have loved to attend your session. Will you be sharing your resources for those of us that can't make it?

Thanks!
Lori
Lori - If i'm of sound mind today, have solid bandwidth and remember to do so, I'll capture it and post the session screencast here.
Thanks Ron!
So - the bandwidth wasn't quite what I needed to make Adobe Connect work well enough to capture the session - however, if you would like the notes from the session, you can get them here. You can see a couple of example learning games on my Moodle server (use guest access) and look for 'Fling the Teacher' and 'Teacher Invaders' as a starting point to get the idea.

If you have questions - let me know here or via Twitter @ronhoutman
Hi Ron, If you haven't already you should take a look at the free myUdutu http://www.myudutu.com/myudutu/login.aspx
