Thank you for the suggestion of Google Forms.  I often struggle finding technology tools that my first grade students can be successful/productive with.  It takes some time for them to understand the concept of the material and then having to introduce the technology aspect of it can be daunting.  Google Forms seems to be simple enough for them to grasp onto yet very meaningful in the results they receive.

Google form works great as well for younger students as well.  I suggested it to a teacher who was doing graphing.  Instead of the students wasting class time wondering the hallways interrupting teachers and students, all they did was create a form and e-mail it to their fellow 2nd grade students.  All that I had to do was provide them with the class lists and instruction on how to create a google form.  Since every student starting in Grade 2 has a School Gmail account this made it really easy for the classroom teacher and for the student to collect their data for the upcoming graphing unit.

I have taken many surveys through survey monkey but have never actually made any of my own.  Thanks for reminding me of this, I'll have to try!  I have heard that Google Forms is a great alternative also, as another reply has already said.

Just recently (as in only for about 2 months now) I have been blessed with some added technologies in my classroom.  A LCD projector was installed, and my teaching partner (the other 6th gr. science teacher) and I share a document camera.  I have been trying to use these technologies more and more, and find that breaking up the class period with a short video clip, or even just an image that they can relate the subject matter to makes a huge difference in the kids' attention in the material, especially for the large amount of visual learners that I have.  I think as I continue to take classes toward my ed. tech. masters, and I gain more and more experience with the technologies that I have, I will use them more often.

 

Something new that I would like to try to implement more often would be Podcasting.  A teacher from my building wrote a grant for 40 iPod nanos for our building.  I would like to use them to record lectures and science demos for absent kids, record tests being read aloud, and for kids to even potentially record presentations for me to watch later.  I do not have much experience with the Podcasting, but I think that could easily be learned in a "trial by fire" sort of manner if need be.

Wow.I wish my organization had access to funds for ipods I think it would be a great tool for student learning in the classroom if utilized correctly.

I often Youtube along with an lcd projector to show students videos for demonstrations.  I like the idea of videotaping.  I could have students videotape themselves doing something like shooting a freethrow and we could watch it in slow motion to evaluate the students form.  I did make a smartboard but I do not use it very often.  There is very little sitting in my gym class I try to keep my instructions to under 45 seconds for any one activity we do.  I would like to skype with another gym class or have an expert show us a game.

I learned that the old school way is boring and not as effective to the generation that we teach.  I must agree, they seem to get bored easily and there attention span is not long at all.  Our school has already began to implement the media tools covered in this lesson.  We have smart boards in almost all our classroom.  I love using my white board, to me it tricks the kids, they are learning and having fun while doing it.   I remember teaching the first graders how to tell time using the smart board, the kids were so engaged and excited, even there homeroom teacher was impressed and shocked at there interaction.  Teaching with technology is the way.  

 

The online learning is going to become to the new way.  I want to implement this some way at my school.  I was talking to one of the senior counselor and she mentioned this to me.  I think this is great for juniors and seniors, this will prepare them for college, most college students have to take at least one online course.

I agree with you my husband is an assistant principal for a STEM middle school and through watching him and volunteering at his school when my work schedule permits, I can see the disinterest in the way the students are learning.  Students are more into technology video games, internet, etc, so there has to be a middle ground where the old way can meet with the new way of learning.

I just finished an instructional assignment and used the powerpoint kiosk to display it.  This was a wonderful tool that I plan on implementing into my classroom, because it is a stand alone show that doesn't have to be posted to the internet.  Sometimes you may want to get the lesson across to students without it being on the internet.  This is one that I would suggest (classrooms, business meetings, trade shows, etc)  I have begun using this format in my everyday work environment.

 

Currently, I do not teach, but in my line of work I do use a lot of powerpoints, this is a new way of using it and a very effective way to travel with presentations.

I too think using PowerPoint in kiosk mode is a great tool. I plan to use this in my future classroom. It has the possibility to be used as different tools of the lesson, such as pre-test, post-test, review, or even as an extension activity. I agree too that it can be used in a variety of settings to serve the same purpose.

I just used PPT in Kiosk mode to make my STAIR for 811! It was my first time using it and I am really impressed. I made a lesson that my students in my Career and College Goals class will, I believe, really benefit from using. I plan to make more PPT's using the Kiosk mode.

I agree with your opinion of this program. I feel that it opens up the doors for students who don't learn the old school style best.
