Jeff,
This is a great place to encourage this discussion. When I do my training with teachers, I try to incorporate as much of the elements you listed as possible. It is an area that certainly needs further exploration.
Let's explore some more.

Anne,

Thanks for inviting me to this group. I have a keen interest in this topic in regards to students with disabilities. One challenge I see is the absence of a rubric to evaluate blended learning in its accessibility to diverse learners. I am wondering if this group would like to develop one.

As a starting point, I would like to submit a list of questions that could be asked to measure accessibility of blended learning for students with disabilities.

Does blended learning provide:

Activities that engage student interest and attention?
Background knowledge for the instructional content?
Learning material consistent with a variety of instructional reading levels?
Learning material consistent with different cognitive levels?
Sufficient time with the materials, instruction, and activities?
Adequate individual feedback?
Alternative presentation modes?
Well organized learning material with key concepts and facts emphasized?
Supports to bridge learning or physiological barriers (i.e. text reader).
Opportunities for peer help and/or collaboration?

These are actually questions we should ask for all instruction. But, as we look at blended learning as a promising instructional strategy, I think it will be important to develop a rubric that will support and encourage the development of universally designed blended learning.

Anne,
I am thinking that teachers need to experience blended learning and discover how it makes them a better learner. That way they will be able to make the transition to their classroom. We are starting a session for teachers in the next few weeks. See my reply in the blended learning in your district.
