We ran our own district Moodle server for 3 years, before moving our teachers to the Wayne RESA server last summer. The move was 99% transparent to our staff, but we (the district) recovered the server as well as the time and money spent administrating it.

I think there's a strong attachment to what you've created with Moodle, coupled with the ability to "brand" your service. I mean, if everyone is just using "moodle" instead of our "ePark Online Learning System" it just doesn't sound as impressive :)
