- Things have been quiet, but let me comment on the last post back in April. Much of what we call math disability is nothing more than arithmetic disability. Might it be easier to teach algebra if the arithmetic were invisible? Suppose you used Excel so that the student could concentrate on the logic of algebra and not be concerned with computation. Computation is the part of mathematics that is most easily automated. Perhaps arithmetic was the basis of mathematics in the 19th century, but not in the 21st.

I teach math in a Day Treatment program and Algebra is difficult for my students, but they need 4 yrs of math for a diploma. Also, it is difficult to teach algebra to students who function at a 3rd grade level in math.

I am a ELA teacher in a Day Treatment and it seems that many of my students will not get a diploma in a timely manner due to the outrageous criteria....
