Teaching in the Virtual World

My sim called MyMichigan on ReactionGrid

Yesterday I was home sick. It happens to all of us sooner or later, and usually at the worst possible time. Staying home yesterday for a doctor's appointment in the morning (Where they so do not get that you can't use the restroom at will) I was able to kinda/sort able to be with my kids at home.

My 7th graders…

Another Year of Possibilities

As the Year Begins a few Thoughts and Goals...

As Computer Teacher and a Digital Explorer I will try to:

1. Spend less time pulling 10/100 line and fixing CAT5 plugs and more time pulling together ideas for instruction.

2. Less time doing my favorite projects and more time creating projects the students need.

3.Less time scheduling the classes so the teachers have break that are convenient for them and more time incorporating a few minutes of break the… Continue

Digital Explorer

I have long been unhappy with the terms Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants. It felt so unfair to be called an Immigrant, since I was over 40 and lived in a world without computers before college. Instead I prefer to call myself a DIGITAL EXPLORER!

Why you ask??? Well like most of us who read and write here, we have been exploring technology for many years! From when the Apple II's, floppy disks and MECC were what it was all about ...and on to web 2.0 ,3.0, Second Life, Blogs,… Continue

The Final 4 in Education

For educators this is the final 4. Those last weeks of school before the children have vacation. If we are lucky we may get a few weeks off as well. More than likely, most of us will be “in school” ourselves, attending webinars, and classes. The ending of one school year does afford one an opportunity to look back, reflect, take stock, and do a little self reflection.

I Get By with a Little Help from my Friends!

Not only a good "Oldy song", but a true ode to the possibilities of social networking. I am fortunate that the Shared Time Computer teachers I work with meet once a month. We share ideas, problems, and solutions. I dare say I learn as much from them as most Professional Development Workshops I attend.

In this same vain one of the best parts of the past Macul conference was meeting Ben, Patti, Peggy, and Patty in person. Sitting inside the speakers room another 4 of us got together… Continue

Thanks for the kinds words, Kelley. I lurk on the Classroom 2.0 Ning site, but without any of the real life connections I have in that social network, I couldn't justify me getting involved with yet another PLN. However, providing a place for MACUL Members (many of whom already knew each other), made a lot more sense to me, so here we are!

Kelley,

Hi how are you. I am the Ed Tech Specialist and Trainer at GRPS. I have talked to Esther Kuiper and she speaks very highly of you. I would like to have discussion with you sometime on all of your technology initiatives that you seem to be involved in. I am trying to get GRPS more organized and fluent in technology use across the district. Look forward to future chatting and discussion.

Kelley, being approached by the publishers of the journal is great news! I hope you get some really great feedback from your article. When it gets published, let us know, and I'd be happy to share the links if it's online.

I'll bring it up at the next board meeting of what's going on; the board will love to hear this.

Any educators you can bring to the discussion, from anywhere on the globe, would definitely be a feather in our cap, but more importantly than that, it would give everyone on the site a terrific opportunity to discuss, share, and expand their own knowledge with teachers from other cultures.

The power of being able to reach across the globe and create new knowledge and understanding with others is exactly what we should be spreading. By all means, invite anyone, regardless of their location or affiliation with MACUL, because we're here not just for educators in Michigan, but any educator that wants to make their teaching better.

Your name was given to me as a possibility for your students to submit an article for the Student Corner of the MACUL Journal on how they are using technology in the classroom.

Please contact me if you are interested: seitz.jim@gmail.com

Kelley,

I am interested in getting your overview of the XO computers. We have another building interested in purchasing them and we would like to know more about them.

How are they working for you and what are their strengths and weaknesses in their use.

Also I know this is a stretch but is there anyway that we could visit your classroom and tinker with a machine for a little bit. The PC Techs would like to see one in action and look over the interface, etc.

One last thing . . . have you ever looked at the EEE PC. It seems at least at face value to be very similar to the XO machine but obviously different.

Thanks for taking my questions,

Mark

Awesome news about your videos being featured at the NYSCATE conference. I'll pass word on to Ric to let him know, he'll be really glad to hear that our members are receiving some national attention.

Kudos to you as well :)
